6-21 Bertha Heng and 6-22 Johannes Norland
Johannes was born on an island near Stavanger, Norway. He lived to the age of 80 years, passing away at his home in December 1920. People who were farmers took the name of the farm or island on which they were born thus sometimes, brothers and sisters did not always have the same surname.
The Norland name was originally Nordlan, meaning Northlands.
When Johannes came to this country, his name was translated John as he became known. His business transactions were in the name John Norland. Johannes was a sailor bu trade, sailing open sailboats. He came to the United States in an open sailboat. He came to Iowa and lived with old friends from Norway near LaGrande, Iowa.
He bought birgin prairie of 160 Acres in Fairfield Twp. Palo Alto Co., near Cylinder, Iowa. He deeded one acre of his farm for the cemetary for the burial of Scandinavians and their families. This is where John, Bertha, Nels and Johanna are buried.

Nels, b. 1872 married Johanna Ludvigsen on 1 March 1900, and died on 17 April, 1937 in Palo Alto Co., Iowa - Our ancestor, Anna, b. 1874 - Ole, b. 1879 died at the age of 38 - Mary, b. 1879 died at age 2 - Inger, b. 1882 married Herbert Knudsen - Jacob, b. 1885 died of Scarlet fever at age 8, and Josephine Bertine, b. 1889 married Christopher Thompson.
