Vestur-Barðastrandarsýsla, Iceland
Vestur-Barðastrandarsýsla was one of the counties of Iceland . Counties are no longer administrative units in Iceland, but the name is still used to refer to the area.
Vestur-Barðastrandarsýsla is in the Westfjords and there are now two municipalities, Vesturbyggð and Tálknafjarðarhreppur . They have considerable co-operation, even though Tálknafjarðarhreppur has chosen not to take part in merging the other municipalities in the county into one municipality.
The county boundaries north of Vestur-Ísafjarðarsýsla are from Langanestá in Arnarfjörður up to Gláma , but in Glámuhálendin there are boundaries of four counties, Vestur- and Austur-Barðastrandarsýsla , Vestur-Ísafjarðarsýsla and Strandasýsla . The boundary between Vestur- and Austur-Barðastrandarsýsla is via Skiptá in Kjálkafjörður up to Gláma. Out in Breiðafjörður , the county boundary lies south of Stagley .
The county previously had the following municipalities: Barðastrandarhreppur , which stretched from the county boundary in Kjálkafjörður to Skorarhlíðar . There Rauðasandshreppur took over and reached Altarisberg on Raknadalshlíð . Previously, the district reached Tálknatá , on the headland between Patreksfjörður and Tálknafjörður , but Patrekshreppur was divided from it as a separate municipality in 1906. Tálknafjarðarhreppur, as now, reached from Tálknatá to Kálfadalsá and there Ketildalahreppur took over to Skorarnúpur. Finally, from there, Suðurfjarðahreppur reached the county boundary at Langanestá. Flateyjarhreppurformerly belonged to Vestur-Barðastrandarsýsla but is now part of Reykhólahrepp and thus Austu-Barðastrandasýsla.
In the northern part of the county there are rather narrow fjords ( Arnarfjörður , Tálknafjörður and Patreksfjörður) and the lowlands are rather small, but large and wide sands make an impression on the southern part. In many places there are steep bird cliffs , including Látrabjarg , the largest bird cliff in the North Atlantic . The outermost point is called Bjargtangar and Iceland reaches the farthest west.
The main manors of the county in ancient times were Selárdalur , Saurbær on Rauðasandur , Brjánslækur and Hagi on Barðaströnd . There are ancient restaurants in many places , but now there are three urban areas in the county, Patreksfjörður, Tálknafjörður and Bíldudalur . Churches are in Hagar, Brjánslækur, Saurbær, Breiðuvík , Sauðlauksdalur , Patreksfjörður, Tálknafjörður, Stóra-Laugardalur , Bíldudalur and Selárdalur.
