Efri-Núpur, Iceland
Efri-Núpur or Efrinúpur is a town and church in Núpsdalur , which is one Miðfjarðardalur valley from Miðfjörður in Vestur-Húnavatnssýsla .
Efri-Núpur was previously a national highway because from there it was common to go up to Arnarvatnsheiði and south to Borgarfjarðardalur and from there it was considered a 10 hour walk to the top towns in Borgarfjörður. It was common for tourists to take up accommodation at Efra-Núpi, either when they came down from the heath or before they landed on it. There has been a church in Efra-Núpi since ancient times and there was a special priestly vocation before the Reformation and after that a church from Staðarbakki . The church is now served from Melstad . The present church was consecrated in 1961 and replaced an old wooden church that was then demolished. There is still a church bell from 1510. In the cemetery is the path of the poetess Vatnsenda-Rósa . She died at Efra-Núpi on September 28, 1855 , where she had taken up accommodation on her way home from work in Húnaþing. Húnvetnskar women came to a monument on her way in 1965 and every year a large number of guests come to Efra-Núpi to visit the poet's way. |
