Byre, Finnoy, Rogaland, Norway
Byre is a small island in Finnøy municipality in Rogaland . It is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the municipality, with 4 farms and about 9 permanent residents.
The island has significant fruit cultivation (apples and cherries) and approx. 100 cabins. The island has good arable land and finds have been made from the Neolithic, there has probably been permanent settlement there since the early Iron Age. Several tombs from the Iron Age have been found, and also a phallus stone dating to the same period. In the Middle Ages , the island was a great man's seat, several knights with seats on Byre are known from this period. |
