Hjaltastaður, Iceland
Hjaltastaður is a farm in East Iceland. Hjaltastaður is situated south of Grófargerði, and southwest of Svínafell.
Hjaltastaðir is a town in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjörður . The land previously belonged to the tenants Hjaltastaðahvammur and Hjaltastaðakot (now Grænamýri) and in the 20th century the new farm Hjalli was built in the land of the earth. Hjaltastaða is first mentioned in 1388 but then the land was actually called Syðstihvammur. The name Hjaltastaðan was coined in 1449 .
Eggert Briem , district commissioner of Skagfjörður, lived in Hjaltastaðir from 1862- 1872 and his daughter, the housewife teacher Elín Briem , grew up there . From 1878 to 1880 , the Skagfjörður Women's School operated in Hjaltastaðir, but it had been established in 1877 in Ás in Hegranes . The school was then moved to Flugumýri .
