Johannes Norland
Johannes was born on an island near Stavanger, Norway. He lived to the age of 80 years, passing away at his home in December 1920. People who were farmers took the name of the farm or island on which they were born thus sometimes, brothers and sisters did not always have the same surname.
The Norland name was originally Nordlan, meaning Northlands. When Johannes came to this country, his name was translated John as he became known. His business transactions were in the name John Norland. Johannes was a sailor bu trade, sailing open sailboats. He came to the United States in an open sailboat. He came to Iowa and lived with old friends from Norway near LaGrande, Iowa. He married Bertha Heng who was from Norway. They had been lovers in Norway. He learned to converse in and read the English language after coming to this country. He took an active part in his church. Both were devout Lutherans. |
