Höfðaströnd, Skagafjörður, Iceland
Höfðaströnd is a settlement on the coast around Hofsós on the east side of Skagafjörður . The southernmost town in the area is Gröf and the outermost is Höfði . The group is named after Þórðarhöfði , which makes a great impression on the landscape. Within it is Höfðavatn , the largest lake in Skagafjörður, but it is actually a sea lagoon.
From Höfðaströnd there was for a long time considerable fishing , not only from Hofsós, but also from Bæjarklettar in the land of Bæjar on Höfðaströnd, and a dry camp was built where the inhabitants lived on fish and bird hunting at Drangey , as well as some grasslands. The district's main store was in Hofsós on Höfðaströnd from around 1600, when the port conditions at Kolkuós deteriorated considerably, and until the end of the 19th century, when Sauðárkrókur took over as the main trading place in Skagafjörður. There was also a store in Grafarós on Höfðaströnd from around 1840 to 1915. Höfðaströnd was previously part of Hofshreppur but belongs to the Municipality of Skagafjörður after the merging of districts in the district. There are two church sites on Höfðaströnd, Hof and Gröf, where there is an old prayer house from the second half of the 17th century that was rededicated in 1953. There has been considerable development on Höfðaströnd in recent years and the Bær Art Center is an example of it. |
